 STEM Day 2011

Primary 6 pupils from local primary schools (St. Mary’s Killyclogher, Christ the King, St Colmcille’s, St Conor’s and St Eugene’s Tircur) visited the CBS recently for a STEM promotion day. The purpose of the day was to raise pupil awareness of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). There are over 16 STEM related subjects on the school curriculum, including Home Economics and Sports Studies. Throughout the day students learnt about food science and carried out some practical activities in Home Economics. In Science they carried out several experiments including investigating the chemical reaction of magnesium and acid, collecting hydrogen gas and setting it alight to make it ‘pop’ and examined crystals under the microscope.  They also used maths to learn about weight, mass, balance and strength. The P.6 pupils engineering and technology skills were then put to the test as they had to design, build and launch their own rocket. Pupils also had the opportunity to play some football, badminton and learn a few boxing moves. STEM teachers from the CBS will also visit other primary schools in West Tyrone to promote STEM over the coming months.
