The Year 11 Art & Design class from Omagh CBS in conjunction with artist Dara Hand recently took part in the ‘Connect Sculpture Project’. The Connect Project is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Connect is a four year joint project between Strabane District Council and Omagh District Council, addressing the arts in partnership with communities groups and Government bodies. Over the course of six days Mr Hand and the boys designed and created two stylised sculpture celebrating the role of the canteen staff within the school. The idea for these sculptures stemmed from the boys themselves wanting to celebrate their unsung heroes and to show a mark of appreciation for the role the canteen staff plays in their school lives. These caricature style concrete sculptures are now on location sitting pride of place in the school yard available to be viewed by the whole school community. This has been a valuable experience for the pupils for which special thanks is extended to Mr Hand.
